Research appraisal

Read the funding statement, then keep reading the methods

Sponsorship is relevant context. It does not replace examination of the study question, design and reporting.

A funding disclosure tells readers something important about a study's context. It does not, by itself, prove that the result is valid or invalid. The next task is to inspect what was studied, how the comparison was arranged and which claims the reported results can support.

The SURMOUNT-5 abstract identifies Eli Lilly funding. The SELECT abstract identifies Novo Nordisk funding. Both disclosures belong beside their findings. Treating sponsorship as invisible would omit context; treating it as a complete verdict would skip the actual evidence.

Start with the comparison the sponsor funded

Identify the intervention, comparison group and main outcome. SURMOUNT-5 compared tirzepatide with semaglutide and used weight change as its primary endpoint. SELECT compared semaglutide with placebo and evaluated a cardiovascular composite. Those choices define different questions, even before any result is considered.

A trial cannot answer every commercially relevant comparison at once. Ask whether a promotional claim stays within the comparison actually performed. An outcome against placebo does not directly establish superiority over every alternative medicine or care program.

Keep the design visible

The abstracts describe SURMOUNT-5 as open-label and SELECT as double-blind. That difference is part of the design and deserves acknowledgment. It does not allow this short article to quantify the influence of knowledge about treatment assignment on every outcome.

Randomization, blinding, follow-up and analysis choices should be read from the original report. If only the abstract has been reviewed, do not claim a detailed audit of the methods or data. Our abstract-reading guide explains how to mark that limit.

Ask for the right kind of evidence

A company may cite a medicine trial, its own program report or a customer survey. Those are different evidence types. To assess a service claim, ask which population was studied, whether there was a comparison and how participants entered or left the analysis.

Our Calibrate dossier distinguishes the program's advertised results from this desk's independent verification. We have not audited the underlying patient data or treated a conditional guarantee as a research result.

Preserve context without inventing a score

A useful reading note includes funding and conflicts, design, population, outcome and remaining questions. It should not assign credibility from sponsorship alone or award a clinical winner because a provider appears first in a directory.

The provider comparison includes disclosed promotional placement and public offer research. Those commercial disclosures apply to this publication as well: related sites and repeated claims do not become independent confirmation merely by appearing in several places.
